You are welcome! We are always happy when our northern experiences aid even more southern growers! This method should help, since it'll create a beneficial and slightly warmer microclimate.

Good luck surviving the upcoming arctic blast! We're hopeful that you don't see too much plant damage!

A Thank You for your article. We were not looking for the greenhouse you described, but protecting our plants (single digit overnights) in Middle TN for a few days. The daylight temps predicted to be in high 20s to low 30s.

The insights you provided allowed us to go ahead and cover some plants (with clear plastic bags) that historically suffered single digit temps. winter burn. A few other considerations will be accounted for in our "experiment".

Temporary for a few days-Yes, hoping 2025 growing season is normal.

Thanks.

Thanks for the kind feedback! That's great you've been able to keep things going so late in the season! We previously lived in Missoula and really do miss the more favorable climate compared to our current subarctic efforts! If you think of it, we'd love to hear your feedback after giving the method a try! Good luck next season and have fun!

Great article! I have tomatoes, bell and jalapeno peppers and 1 cucumber plant all still producing and it is October 22, 2024. I am in great falls MT and it is 49 degrees now and expected to get to 58 by mid afternoon. It was 45 overnight. I am going to try the garbage bags over my plants. They all have tomato cages in the pots. I am so excited to see the experiment continue.

Excellent! That is fantastic to hear, glad you were able to make it work. It really surprised us that a method so "simple and silly" might make a difference, but indeed it does. Thanks for trying it out and reporting your results, we truly appreciate it!

Wonderful site! I followed your method and dang I actually have peppers and tomatoes close to ripening. I started late due to summer not showing up until July but I think next year I will for sure just start earlier as the cages and bags made a huge difference so thank you!
