Nine Weeks To Last Frost, Nearly A Packed House!

Well, now that we are nine weeks to our expected last frost, we’re starting to get into our busy season. Our initial germination space is becoming quite packed and soon we’ll be expanding!

The notable sowings from this week are on the flower front, with some favorites being pansy and viola put into the soil. On the veggie front, it’s one of our cold climate favorites, artichoke! We’re quickly coming to an end with these relatively lazy sowing schedules, though. The next four weeks are where we throw down a the overwhelming majority of our seeds!

Many of our early sowings are definitely showing signs that they need to be potted up. Our goal with these seedling trays are to get to a nice plug, which we can then up pot into its more permanent home. We’ll likely be doing this over this coming week, which will also free up some space for the significant germination schedules we have coming up.

We’ve also recently turned on our second light in our grow tent now. We have things set up so that we only use the lighting that we absolutely need. We have relatively high electrical costs and even though we use highly efficient LED lighting, it’s still important for us to mitigate the serious bump our power bill sees around this time of year.

So, we’re enjoying the last few moments of relative lazy gardening. In the coming weeks, we’re expecting break up season (what us Alaskan’s call the thaw) will be upon us and things are going to be a soupy mess. But, that means we’re counting down the weeks to where we can get our hands in our actual gardens!

It’s starting to get pretty real around here! It always seems like this time is when our minds starts shifting from winter hibernation to eagerly anticipating summer. It will be upon us soon enough!
