All Hands On Deck! The Seed Sowing Time For Everyone Begins!

It’s time for our annual wake up call! We’re sitting at 8 weeks to our average last frost here, so this is the time that all you hibernating from seed gardeners simply cannot miss!

The overwhelming majority of everything that we will grow this season will be sown in the next three weeks. This is the time where we throw down everything that’s popular, such as our brassicas, almost all of our herbs, lettuce and other greens and a bit later, our cucurbits like squash and cucumber! It’s the ideal time for those tomatoes and it’s not even too late for peppers!

If you’re into winter sowing techniques, this is the right time to be putting your milk jugs outside. The slow creep into warmer days will coax those seeds to germinate, while the risks of devastating cold temperatures become less and less.

Sure, we did get started a month ago. But, we grow things like onions, celery and plenty of flowers that have lengthy germination times or simply take a particularly long time to grow. But, if you’re just catching up, you haven’t missed out on very many critical things. And you could even start those things we just mentioned, though you might see a bit of a hit to final maturity.

At least around here, we are seeing the very beginning of our seasonal thaw. This always helps those growers realize “it’s time,” but we figure a little nudge in the right direction also won’t hurt!

It’s simply amazing that in around a month’s time, we’ll begin working our actual soils and preparing our gardens for this year’s crops. We can’t tell you how relieved we are to finally be emerging out of winter’s cocoon, with a clear and relatively short path to outdoor barbeques, summer fun and plenty of growing antics!

We’ve got a huge checklist to get through this weekend, you’re about to see our indoor grow room entirely transform! All those tiny little seedlings are well on their way to becoming adult plants! We’ll be sure to take you along with the things we’re doing, just in case you’re following along at home!
