And boom. Just like that, our indoor garden and seed starting operation has doubled in size! We got our first major transplanting session done and boy was it a big one!
Our first temporary growing table of the season is now up, basically a 2×6 table with a couple of grow lights hanging above it. We use these to handle the inevitable and rapid expansion that indoor seed starting operations go through, especially once you start potting up those plants!
This up potting effort will ensure our seedlings have more soil to continue growing, which is essential for raising quality garden starts. Remember, we still have another six to eight weeks of growth that we need to handle here and these plants will use every bit of soil they are given! Also, when you starve plants for soil, they will tend to experience drought conditions very quickly and will generally show signs of stress.
Fortunately, we have only a few transplanting sessions that are as intense as this early one. Our allium crop really puts the pressure on, with hundreds of onion, shallot and leek plants being potted up. Our future sessions tend to be a bit more measured, with our brassicas typically being the next biggest transplant session. This one took us about five hours, beginning to end.
We’re up to fifteen 1020 trays at this point with many more to come. We’ll triple the size of our seed raising operation by the time we get to next month!
We’ve opted to punt our typical sowing session into tomorrow, we’re a bit exhausted after all that work! Right now, it’s time for a fine cocktail to celebrate our efforts and another major milestone in our 2025 garden!
