As we were saying, eight weeks to last frost is where we really start to dig in! With almost 300 seeds sown just today, the bulk of our major gardens are finally starting to take form!
We’ve started into our brassicas, favoring to sow our Brussels sprouts this early. We’ve found they benefit from every bit of time we can give them and our short 100 day season is just barely enough as is to get them done. We’ve also started into some of our herbs. Followed by a rather large number of flowers that do quite well with this timing.
Our indoor growing spaces are now at full capacity again and we will need to put up our second temporary growing table by this coming weekend. We’ve found in recent years that having a second growing table alleviates a lot of our expansion issues in the middle of our indoor growing season. Having plenty of overflow space for plants, where they can still get grow lights, simply solves a lot of problems for us.
Our outdoor temperatures and weather haven’t yet stabilized enough for us to consider hardening off some of our plants and stashing them in our heated greenhouse just yet. We only do this once it’s sensible to be heating against the great outdoors. We’ve found this can be anywhere from four to eight weeks to our last frost and it’s completely unpredictable! We’ll talk about this more when we get there.
We are definitely starting to feel the pressures of multiple timelines converging together around this time. There’s a lot of keep track of at this stage, between sowing and transplanting. Very soon, we’ll also be adding hardening off into the mix, too! We’re definitely starting to get quite busy!
We’re super excited that we’re only about six weeks to where we can start moving our plants into our actual gardens. This is always a great transition for us, as we’ve been exhausted by winter and are fully ready for a change!
