The People Behind Frosty Garden

Before we get too far into the growing season, we figure it’s appropriate to put some faces to who Frosty Garden is! In case you don’t know who we are, we are Jeff & Kayde and we are the people behind Frosty Garden!

As for what we do? We’re a couple of life long gardeners, sharing our gardening experience and knowledge through creative outlets like writing, photography, occasional video editing and some serious growing prowess. We are not so-called “master gardeners,” rather we walk the path of being life long learners with a passion for producing for ourselves. Our aim is to provide you with insightful and high quality one minute reads, once per day, during our growing season.

These days, we are growing at 65 degrees north, just north of Fairbanks, Alaska. Known as the coldest city in North America, a place often colder than Mars, we’ve been refining our growing craft in one of the most extreme climates on earth. Here, we experiment a lot and regularly try to re-think gardening in the context of a challenging growing environment and modern day lifestyles.

We try to bring you along our gardening path as best we can, curating a large range of topics, knowledge, techniques and methods we use. Our posts walk a tight rope that spans beginner, amateur and advanced gardening topics. Along the way, we also pepper in tried and true gardening tips & tricks, along with timely know-how that we’ve developed over decades of growing experiences. We also willingly demonstrate our failures, because gardening is hard and no one has it all figured out.

Our gardens occupy the space between the average hobby garden and a full scale farmer. Currently, we operate ten different gardens with various food and flower focuses, ranging from traditional vegetable and flower gardens to a subarctic hardy perennial food forest. Our growing efforts are responsible for providing about 15-20% of our total annual food needs. To get there, we practice most food preservation techniques, both commonly used and much more obscure.

We employ many gardening techniques, from traditional to highly engineered, all with a goal of intensive food and flower production in subarctic climates. The gardens we share with you are designed to illustrate the different ways one can successfully grow food and flowers in the far north and well beyond. We’ve been 100% “from seed” grown for several years now, so we’re also well versed in indoor gardening techniques and full cycle plant care across a vast number of plant species.

You can find our most comprehensive resource at FrostyGarden.com, which we’ve been refining for an entire decade now. There, you can find deep dives into various cold climate gardening topics and the last several years of our social media musings. We also publish the most detailed seed sowing schedules for zones 0 through 6 found on planet earth, a subject few want to touch! We also have presence on a few other socials, too, in the event you want to see our full efforts.

Today, we humbly ask you for those likes, comments and shares over this growing season. Put simply, social media works on the concept of engagement. If you want to see our stuff, your end of the deal is to regularly engage with our stuff and “the algorithm” will do the rest. We know that every single post we make isn’t always five star material, but your support is valuable to both of us if we make the kind of content you want to see.

We want to thank all of you for helping to put our work “on the map” as it were. We recently crested ten thousand+ followers across our various channels and we never once imagined our “little subarctic gardens” would garner so much interest. We are incredibly grateful to those who have supported us for years and we also warmly welcome those who have just recently found us! We look forward to growing with you in 2025 and beyond. So, let’s get to it!
