Well, our cucumbers are finally in! We’ve got a few stragglers that we’re trying to finish up here, but we were waiting for warmer temps. We’re not going to get that when we want it, so we just have to trust our greenhouse heating will do its job and hope for the best!
Honestly, sometimes we really struggle with these late sows and plantings. Once we get the bulk of our garden in, our focus starts to shift towards our other summer projects. It’s tremendously difficult for us to focus on “all the things” and any tasks like indoor growing or hardening off that we’re still doing is definitely at risk of us forgetting about it.
The perspective of most Alaskan’s and other far northerners is different from most. We have three, maybe four, months to accomplish almost anything outdoors that isn’t moving snow. We work so incredibly hard over the summer. Every weeknight and definitely every weekend day is valuable to us. This is why we take our winter break so seriously, we need to recoup the mental and physical capacity to just go, go, go.
The colder than average spring we’re seeing is really messing with our efforts. There’s things, like our peppers, that we just can’t yet plant because the temperatures don’t support it. Fortunately, this does look like it’s going to shift next week, so we’ll soon be able to push to fully complete our gardens. We can really use the break!
We’re definitely not complaining. It’s feeling so good to work outdoors. Even today, we were working through pretty good rainfall and we just kept pushing, hard as ever. Even our cats didn’t really want to come outside and hang out with us! And they’re pretty hardy, even enjoying nice winter days outdoors!
We made some good progress on some other tasks, which we’ll be showing you soon. We’re finally finishing our subarctic rose garden this season, so we’re excited to share it with you all once it’s finished!
