Tips For Personal Travel & Operating Large Gardens

So, generally speaking, we try to do very little travel over the summer. Our gardens are a lot, Plus, anyone worth their salt knows Alaska has the very best summer’s on earth. Why would you want to be anywhere else?

But, sometimes it’s unavoidable. So, let’s talk about how we prepare ourselves for success!

First, if we have to travel during our summer months, August is our only opportunity. We generally see a lot of rain during this time, so we don’t have to arrange garden sitters and train others on how to water our gardens.

Next, you all probably don’t appreciate our sub irrigated systems and off-grid gardening as much as we do. But, it allows us flexibility that is unmatched! We can just up and go, making sure our reservoirs are filled, and we have days of time available.

If we were to follow all that up, we practice “deep watering” techniques. Our soils are deeply watered, which makes sure our plants are accustomed to intermittent watering. This effort can’t be underestimated. Plants with great roots can be ignored, needy plants cannot.

It’s all a lot of work to prep, but then we can just pop smoke and go where we need. Our systems are good for a week or more. And while some of you may question “why” we go to such extents, it’s well worth our efforts to craft a flexible circumstance with our gardens!

Our focus with gardening has been towards the idea that when we’ve “gotta go,” it’s not an emergency. Life can’t always be planned and figured out to a T, so our garden’s architecture should be lenient of that fact! If you look at our methods, you’ll see some wisdom there!

A lot of gardeners have a lot less flexibility than we do. We’re not panicked, things are doing just fine. In fact, we’re planning a super special flower Friday for you all! But, we’ll be back in the saddle soon and are looking forward to it!
