The Alaska Garden Season Begins: Our Journey As A Northern Garden Blog

Several years ago, we changed our focus here at Frosty Garden significantly. We went from being an “Interior & South Central Alaska” gardening resource to a “far northern” gardening resource.

A huge part of the reason for this was because of all of you. The information we produce is relevant to Canadians, Norwegians, Swedes, people all across the most northern parts of the globe. Places many of you live! We’ve also picked up high elevation growers who face similar growing challenges. Extreme cold climate growing, wherever that place is, is largely similar.

We still very much focus on growing in Alaska, it’s our primary inspiration! But, as we tried to go “more regional” in our focus, we also realized that simply trying to be an “Alaskan” resource is still immensely challenging. We have nine different growing zones to cover, just within Alaska alone! Most states have one or two growing zones, yet our state’s first and last frost dates are quite literally separated by months!

What we’d like to point out is that our most southern Alaskans enjoy a lovely 8A or 8B growing zone. If you’re out on the Aleutians or find yourself in the most southern tips of Southeast Alaska, that could be you! Even though it’s only January, these zones can now start considering an indoor sow of their 2026 gardens! You’ve got far more seasonal flexibility than we do up north, so you can also wait if you like.

But, there’s an exciting bit to this! What this means for the rest of us northern growers is, from here on out, the 2026 gardening season will open up more and more as we go further north in latitude!

It’s still “way early” for us “real” northerners (hehe), but we thought this was worth us pointing out! If you’re kicking off your season, we’re rooting for you from 30 below zero!
