Our 2026 Seed Orders Are In & Our Garden Planning Process

Well, we’ve knocked down a major 2026 season milestone. Our seed orders are in. So now we wait!

Since we’re discussing early garden planning, we should probably discuss the topic in a bit more depth. Subarctic gardening leaves little room for error, so we’re strong advocates for having a solid plan when going into the gardening season.

If you’re a newer subarctic gardener, one of the unique things about extreme northern gardening is how fast paced it is. Almost everything happens in a mere 12 week’s time. Having a reasonable plan helps us deal with that pace, reducing issues, errors and problems that come up.

There are many things we need to figure out in our garden planning process. A physical plan helps us know what we will plant and where it will be planted. We need to understand our seed stock and what we’ll need for the season. Whether you raise or buy plants, you’ll need an idea of how many you need to raise or buy. There’s also lots of minor details like crop rotations we have to think about.

Having, and more importantly sticking to, a plan really helps us save a ton of money. We find seed shopping incredibly “dangerous” to our pocket book, it’s very easy to get carried away. But, when we’ve determined our needs and do our best to stick to those needs, we’re less inclined to go “totally nuts.”

In case you want a bit of insight into our garden planning process, we’ve got a full length article on the subject, including the tools we use. Linky down in the comments.

As for us, we’re getting to the point where we’ll darn near ready for 2026! We’ve got some fun surprises and experiments in store for you, as usual. And we are looking forward to it!
