The 8 Most Important Things A Subarctic Gardener Needs To Know!

Well, we are officially three weeks out to kicking off our 2026 growing season! The countdown is on!

This time of the year never really “feels” like gardening season for us. We’ve still got feet of snow on the ground, no thaw in sight and months of cold ahead of us. But, come March, we’ll be kicking off our process of developing over a thousand garden starts from seed!

In case you’re a new subarctic or extreme northern gardener, you have found the right place! We try to illustrate the things we’re doing, as we do them, so that our information is both timely and helpful. If you’re growing at slightly more southern latitudes, the stuff we talk about is still relevant but you may have to alter our information for your specific climate.

For you new northern growers, we put together a feature length article that covers the eight most important things we think a newer subarctic grower needs to know. It’s important to have a grasp on what’s to come, otherwise the speed of our growing season can quickly overtake you. Link down in the comments.

We like to use a couple of words to describe our growing season; fast and unforgiving. We say this not to scare you, but rather to prepare you for what’s to come. The period from seed to harvest is incredibly short with very little “down time” waiting for stuff to happen. It almost feels like one day you transplant, the next you’re harvesting.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be intermittently posting about some very early season stuff we do. Then, come March, we’ll be returning to our “mostly daily” posting regimen!

We again thank you all for being a part of our journey. This will be our eleventh season with Frosty Garden and we’re looking forward to making it another great one!
