Since we’re still a couple of weeks out from kicking off our 2026 garden, we’re offering up a few “sneak peaks” of our upcoming process and what’s all about to go down!
When we scaled our from seed growing process from a hobby garden to a larger preservation focused garden, our seed starting process hit some walls. It’s one thing to grow a couple hundred starts, another to grow over a thousand like we do.
There are a lot of different methods for growing garden starts from seed. Honestly, most of them will work reasonably well. But, our two main focuses here at Frosty Garden are “high quality” and also “space saving.” As such, our choices often reflect these two goals.
We don’t live in a particularly large home or have a dedicated plant raising area, so our seed starting process must fit within our living space. Thus, all of our practices are built around maximizing space utilization and also allowing the process to expand with minimal intrusion into our lifestyle.
As for quality, we learned that we can often do “better” than the nursery. This metric isn’t just about plant quality, but also controlling our desired maturity levels and being able to grow things you simply won’t find at your local nursery.
One of the main reasons we choose to grow from seed indoors, as opposed to using techniques like winter sowing, is the plant diversity we grow. We grow quite a few things that simply take a lot of time (6+ months) to mature. We also grow a lot of warm loving plants that simply won’t germinate in the cold. Simply, we’d rather have one process than two.
As we discussed yesterday, for those who want to “jump ahead” and learn all about our from seed growing process, you can find a link down to part two down in the comments. This link also contains our “growing from seed” video series we produced!
We’re getting really close here! We have a few last minute things we still need to do to prepare, so we’ll be discussing those things here soon!
