And we are off! We have seeds in the soil, our grow lights are now kicking off daily and soon we’ll have young seedlings. Those seedlings will develop into young plants, only to be fully matured in our summer gardens!
While our first sowing of the season might look a bit underwhelming, it scales up very quickly. Our very early season sows are modest, including onions, shallots, celery, celeriac and our prized pepper crop.
All of these crops demand a full six months to get from seed to a mature crop. There’s just no way to cheat it, absent buying plants from the local nursery. When we do the math on operating our “early” grow room versus buying these plants, for us, it highly favors growing from seed.
This point in the season always feels so good. Frankly, this winter has beaten us down pretty hard. Between “all time” record cold and also record hitting snowfalls, we’re just done with winter. We usually have a bit more “oomph” left in us at this point. But this year? We’re just done with it. Over it and ready to move on.
The bad news is we still have a month of full on winter ahead of us. The good news is some of the sweetest music ever heard by our ears. We are now on the path to *absolute certainty* that winter will end! The thaw is nigh!
This point in our season is as much about starting our gardens as it is our transition from an icy kingdom to one of the best places on planet earth. Winter takes its toll on our bodies and souls. But soon, we will remember the real reason we live, work and grow here!
