Before we get too deep into the weeds, we find it helpful to illustrate our position in all this growing stuff. We aren’t here to tell you the “only” way, we are here to show you “our” way. This is a “how we do it” place, not a “how to do it” environment.
Occasionally, we get readers that take our opinions or preferences and assume we’re some “authoritarian” source on growing from seed or growing food in far northern climates. Or, maybe they fundamentally disagree with our value equations or ideas.
We’d like to be clear. We give an extremely wide berth to the ideas and necessities of far northern food production. We don’t stand opposed to alternative ideas, methods or practices. If anything, we encourage the deep exploration, documentation and communication of your better ideas!
One of the core ideas we’ve homed in on is that “far northern agriculture” is a relatively new-found thing within the broad landscape of global agriculture. The last thing we want to be are gatekeepers. In fact, we want to promote all ideas, thoughts, experiments and trials. If anything, to give you a platform to voice those ideas!
But, this also must come with recognition that what works for some, doesn’t work for all. Just like we’ve had to, you have to understand that biology, climate, latitude and ability are influencing factors you must take into account.
All we’re trying to illustrate here is “serious food production” at the home scale within the subarctic. The goal is to show two things. One, it’s possible. Two, this is just how we do it. That’s about it.
