Happy “Spring” Everyone, What We’re Looking Forward To!

Happy “spring” everyone. We find the spring equinox almost comical to celebrate here. It was 20 below zero this morning and perhaps obviously, our frozen world hasn’t even begun to give way even a little bit.

This winter has been absolutely brutal on us. We’ve had some of the coldest sustained temperatures and heaviest snowfalls in recorded history. Many of you that went through this are probably also at your wits end, big time. So, let’s talk good news!

An advantage for us northern gardeners has subtly and quietly been developing around us. We’re now up to nearly 14 hours of sunlight a day, increasing by 7 minutes every sunset that flies by. That glorious point of constant daylight will be here in no time!

Soon, all this snow will be unable to resist that sun. Given the persistent and late cold, we’re expecting a sudden, fast and torrential thaw. Mud season will be annoying, but our world will change almost like a flick of a switch.

Also fortunately, severity of winter doesn’t determine summer. Trade winds do. We’re expecting a shift into El Nino this summer. Though this isn’t good news for all far northerners, where we’re at, this is expected to bring us a warmer temperatures and drier than normal conditions.

So, things are stacking up for the better! These forces are irresistible, nature can only pull the rug out from under us so many times!

Remember, us “from seed” growers have a clock! That countdown to last frost is very real and practically immutable. As of tomorrow, we’re ten weeks out. And it cannot come soon enough this year!
