Using A Seeder Tool In The Indoor Nursery: When & Why?

You might have seen this tool in some of our pics, so let’s discuss what it is about and when we use it! It comes in super handy for certain sowing tasks!

This tool goes by a few names. Seeder, seeder sower or sometimes a seed dispenser. The gist is you place seeds in the center portion, then can more easily and precisely dispense the seeds to their desired sowing location.

The clear plastic bit has several sized openings, which allows you to tailor the output for the seed size you’re working with. The chute has little graduations, which helps slow down the rate of seeds. A simple “tap, tap” moves seeds down the chute, but in a controlled way.

Most of the time, we sow by hand. But, when we have to sow a lot of something, we break out this tool. It speeds things up quite a bit, allowing us to tear through a ton of sowing in short order. We see a tool like this is kind of a middle ground between sowing by hand and large, commercial focused seeders.

Another area this tool can come in handy is with really small seeds, like petunia or mint. These tiny seeds can be challenging to manipulate with your fingers, at least without dumping a ton of seeds in the soil. A seeding tool can really help slow things down.

If you struggle with a bit of fine control to manipulate seeds by hand, this might be the tool for you too. It changes the whole process, offering the sower a way to observe seed distribution while it happens.

We find it a useful tool to keep in our kit. Though we don’t always use it, we find it comes in handy for certain situations. You might too! You can find them online or sometimes at your local nursery!
