Let’s talk about the time we spend growing our garden from seed! How is that time allocated? How much do we spend each day? Is it time consuming to grow from seed?
Perhaps obviously, the amount of time we spend varies depending on what tasks lie before us. We do make it a point to visit our indoor nursery once every day, making sure we’re staying on tasks like watering, checking for problems and anticipating future tasks.
The average daily visit to our nursery is usually about 15 to 30 minutes. It’s more if we have to do a lot of watering or fertilizing, for example. But, sometimes we’re just giving all our plants a once over and if everything looks good, we’re done!
We push our “big days” into our weekends, because that’s simply when we have time. The tasks we do on the weekends are sowing and transplanting.
As for the most time intensive task, transplanting takes time. At minimum, we’re usually spending a couple hours between filling containers with soil, performing the actual transplant and watering in the new transplants. It can be as much as five or six hours on those “busy” weekends.
Sowing can also be time intensive, but it depends on how much we need to sow. We discuss both “light” and “heavy” sowing days, so it can vary. A short sowing session is probably 30 minutes. A big one can take two to three hours.
We’re we to average it out, we probably spend about four to six hours a week. But, the peaks get lost in averages. Some weeks are as short as a couple hours, some are greater than eight hours.
At least for us, we don’t find that too onerous, especially since we break the time up over an entire week. It can definitely feel like a lot on those “big days,” but it’s still quite manageable to deal with!
