Is Growing From Seed For You? Here’s An Overview!

We’ve been “from seed” growers for a long time. As we stepped up to help teach others the growing craft, it became important for us to distinguish that growing from seed and having a garden are two completely different things.

In a couple of weeks from now, we’ll be heavily discussing the topic of growing a garden from seed. But, it’s helpful to understand that while gardening may be for you, growing from seed may not be. They are vastly different skillsets.

It’s totally OK to have a garden with store bought plants. For some people, what they want is a garden and not the hassle of germination and caring for young seedlings. It’s also OK to be somewhere in between. We spent a lot of time here, it took us a lot of years to build expertise across raising “all the plants” from seed.

You can save some money by growing from seed. Plants are expensive and seeds are comparatively cheap. However, that’s not to say it’s absent of cost. There are some investments required to achieve “high quality” garden starts. It’s not as simple as tossing some seeds in potting soil, putting them by a window sill and calling it a day.

There can considerable costs involved with growing from seed. From grow lights to all the equipment appropriate to get a seed to a seedling, then all the way to a garden transplant. It also takes up space in the home. There’s also significant input costs, like soil, electricity, fertilizer and water. Not to mention, an entirely different learning curve!

We’ve detailed our seed germination and plant raising process extensively. Over the decades, we’ve answered the question of “if you could go back, what would you do differently?” Our current process reflects that evolution.

We’ll definitely be getting into the nuts and bolts of our process in our coming daily posts, but if you want to jump ahead, we have two feature length articles that deep dive into our seed raising process. The first part, linked in the comments, is more of an overview of starting plants from seed. We encourage you to start there!

We’re two weeks out and really starting to get excited! We’ve decided March 7th will be our kick off date for 2026!
